I want to know if anyone remembers what was on the northeast corner of Cooper & Madison before the Godfather restaurant opened there.

My mother worked for Vogue distribution, owned by Alvin Lansky - they supplied black beauty products to drugstores. Anyone remember them or what happened down there? This was around 72-74. Thank you.

Anyone remember Leonard's BBQ in the 70's? My Granddaddy took me there for lunch when we visited.

There is still a Leonard's barbecue on Fox Plaza Drive near Mendenhall and Mt. Moriah and in the last year or so one was opened on Main Street in downtown Memphis.
I haven't been by the original Leonards since it closed so I don't know if that building is still there or not. I wonder what they did with all those silver dollars.

I could be wrong, but was there a restaurant/bar at the northeast corner of Cooper and Madison known as Yosemite Sam's? The memory is vague, but it seems to ring a bell.

Leonard's BBQ on south Bellevue was such a part of Memphis. Whenever out of town company came, we would buy bbq in bulk, because Leonard's BBQ meant Memphis. Also, weren't there silver dollars embedded in the floor????

My Grandfather was the manager for the Goodyear retread plant in Memphis and when we were visiting would take me in for a half-day work to get me out of my parents' hair for a while. Lunch was either a Leonard's or at a diner (the name escapes me).

Incidentally, a picture of Leonard's is included in the liner notes/CD insert in the ZZ Top CD "Recycler."

Yosemite Sam's is still there. They used to have the cheapest pitchers of beer on The Square.
The drive in was the main part of Leonard's as far as we were concerned as kids. All of us would get in the car, pick up my grandparents and eat bbq in the car in summmer. My dad would try to pick up a Cardinals game on AM if the sky was clear. It didn't seem so hot in July as it does now.
Their beans still taste exactly the same.

I remember when Henry Loeb was mayor. I was barely 16 years old and I worked for Dr, Kenneth Whittington as a vet's assistant. The Mayor was a good friend of Dr. Whitt's and he took all of us out to eat lunch one day. I also remember Loeb's barbecue. The family also owned a dry cleaners and if you got barbecue sauce on your shirt, you'd get a free coupon to have it cleaned. WOW! And how about Beretta's at Park and Highland? What great memories.

It was a big deal when Dad would take all of us to Lenards in the 1950s and 60s. I would love one of those sandwiches from back then. I remember some people just getting a huge plate of skins. That just amazed me as a child.
I also unfortunately remember the outside service window and the covered outside tables for those not allowed inside.

I think there was a Kelly Springfield tire and service station on the NE corner of Madison and Cooper before the square was built.
