The Raleigh Springs & Inn

The Hotel at Raleigh Springs, 1895.

The Inn and Springs were located north of James Road west of Austin Peay.  They were a popular daytime resort location, with streetcars running out Jackson Avenue on a regular basis.

The Springs dried up and the Inn later burned down. The land is now privately owned and heavily wooded, with no public access and nothing left to see.

To learn more, read the Ask Vance article from the May 2007 Memphis Magazine.

The Raleigh Courthouse & Town Square

In the town's original layout, the Raleigh town square was located on what would later become the southwest corner of Austin Peay and James Road.  It is the highest point in Raleigh, and in the old days it had a commanding view of the Wolf River below.  In the mid-1800s, Raleigh served for awhile as the county seat, and the Shelby County Courthouse stood in the town square.

After Memphis grew faster than Raleigh, the courts were moved to Memphis, and the courthouse was dismantled and the stone re-used elsewhere.  The site was later the location of the James M. Coleman House, which served as the Old Raleigh Library from 1955 to 1966.

Raleigh Cemetery

Two blocks from the courthouse site, on the original Raleigh-Lagrange Road, is the Raleigh cemetery. It's across the street from Walls Automotive.

The Old Raleigh Jail

Also two blocks from the courthouse site, on the southeast corner of Stage and East (across from Skateland), is a Coleman Taylor that stands where the original Raleigh jail once stood.

I remember living in Raleigh during the 70s and 80s and the downfall of the once proud community came in the 90s and now I can't believe that I once even lived there as it is now crime infested. Have many fond memories of the Raleigh Springs Mall during it's heyday but you couldn't pay me to venture into that place there now. Married my wife at Egypt Baptist Church and we lived there as long as we could until it was no longer desirable or safe to live there anymore. So sad and such a waste.
