Le Bonheur rolls into the 1970s
with Little Red Wagons,
still the favorite mode of transportation
for Le Bonheur patients.

Le Bonheur underwent two major
additions in the 1970s.
Above, land is cleared to the east of the hospital
for the first addition.
Dunlap runs across the bottom of the photo, while
Washington and Adams frame the hospital.

A new wing (right) and parking lot
are added.
The artwork gave rise to Le Bonheur's first mascot,
"Scooter."

Just several years later, major
construction transformed the small children's
hospital into a modern medical center.

The old-style medical amphitheatre
gave way to a modern auditorium.

Le Bonheur ended the decade with a
new building, a new logo,
and a new name, Le Bonheur Children's Medical
Center.

I remember riding in that little red wagon it made you feel less like being
in a hospital. All these years I wondered where that little dog came from
and the hospital probably gave it to me. I had no idea that the dogs name
was Scooter only that It was the summer between 2nd and third grade, I had
just spent two weeks in the hospital scared with IV's, tubes going down my
nose into my stomach and no solid food or liquids for weeks. Sometimes
they would dab my mouth with lemon swabs it made me so happy! Then one day
my favorite nurse brought in a little puppy dog that had been signed by all
my doctors, nurses and everyone who took care of me. It made me Sooooo
happy!! The only thing that was better was getting the tubes out and
getting to eat for the first time in weeks and then hearing I was finally
going home. I cried my first happy tears that day. I had been at that
hospital several times before that freak accident but I always remembered
the way they went out of their way to make me feel safe, happy and
understand a scary time. As a nurse now I appreciate it even more because
with frantic parents it's a tough job.
