Beale Street

Beale Street runs from the Mississippi River to East Street. Beale Street has been playing the blues for more than 60 years. It was named after an unknown military hero in 1841,and acted as General Ulysses S. Grant’s headquarters during the Civil War. In the early 1900s, Beale Street was filled with clubs, restaurants and shops, many of them owned by African-Americans. In the 1960s, Beale Street became run down and many stores closed. Today, the blues clubs and restaurants that line Beale Street are major tourist attractions in Memphis. |
