Downtown Streetcars

The initial line was built in 1993. It was 2.5 miles long, mostly double-tracked. In 1997 it was converted into a loop that was 5 miles. In 2004 service was further extended with the opening of a line on Madison Street running from Main Street east to the Medical District area. The track now totals 7 miles. Seven of the streetcars are four-wheel Brill wooden streetcars, two built in the U.S. in 1912, the rest built later in Portugal to the same Brill design. This design only has 19 seats. Another seven cars are slightly newer with metal bodies and are from Melbourne, Australia. Memphis also uses five replicars built in the past few years. These replicars use a double-trucked Birney design. Streetcars generally run every ten minutes.
